The main focus of gyms in targeting fat loss is to let you do countless aerobic exercises. Like running endlessly on treadmills. Aerobic exercise does NOT actually work for fat-loss. Researchers in Australia took two groups of people and put them on very different programs:
Group 1 did 20 minutes of high intensity interval workout (at week one they did only 5 minutes) at 3 days per week in a span of 15 weeks. Group 2 on the other hand did 40 minutes of aerobics (TWICE as much exercise) in the same span of time.
The result? The first group LOST an average of 5.5lbs of fat while the other group actually GAINED 1lb of fat!

Besides the treadmills, most gyms have a ton of muscle-isolation machines – like an “ab” machine, or a tricep machine, etc. For every muscle there’s a machine… or so the theory goes.
The human body has over 600 muscles in it. So, if you were going to do one set of 12 reps for every muscle in your body without any rest your workout would take you 8 hours.
Furthermore, the theory behind “ab” machines is that if you do a bunch of “ab” work, then one day, your abs will look great. Uh, no. Your abs are already in a 4 pack, 6 pack or an 8 pack. The problem is that you can’t see them because they are covered by a layer of fat.
What you really want if you want to tone any part of your body is to shrink that layer of fat on top of your beautiful muscles. To that end you need exercise that will rev up your metabolism. Metabolic acceleration training is based around exercises that recruit most or all of the muscles in your body at once – the kind of exercises that you can’t do on a machine.
BUT, the problem for the gym is that in order to teach people how to exercise effectively they would have to hire and pay competent staff. It’s much cheaper to baby sit the members with shiny machines.
